The Philadelphia Phillies went into Pittsburgh and PNC Park on Thursday afternoon and wanted to kickoff the start of the 2012 regular season on the right note against the Pirates.  The Phillies ace, Roy Halladay was starting his third straight opening day game for the Philadelphia Phillies.  Halladay did not disappoint the Phillies fans who were in attendance at PNC Park.  He pitched eight strong innings and just gave up two hits and they were in the very first inning.  The Phillies new closer Jonathon Papelbon came in to get his first save of the season and his first save as a Philadelphia Phillie.

Roy Halladay looked in mid season form against the Pirates.  He made the Pirates hitters look silly and confused at the plate in Thursday afternoon's opener for both teams.  The Pirates just could not figure Halladay out.  He allowed just two hits all day and he threw 92 total pitches, 65 were for strikes.  He had total control of his pitches and he cruised to his first win of the new season.

The Phillies finished the game with eight hits and their only extra base hit was John Mayberry's opposite field, seventh inning double, that led to the Phillies only run in the game.

The Phillies started the new season the way they wanted to, with a victory.  The Phillies will no doubt be struggling early in the season with scoring runs.  It is very understandable as well because the Phillies have two of their top run producers who are starting the season on the disabled list.  Chase Utley and Ryan Howard were not in the starting lineup in Thursday afternoon's opener and will not be in the lineup for possibly the first month or two of the season.  The Phillies will totally be depending on their strong starting pitching rotation early on this season and there very well could be a lot of low scoring games, early this year.

Look for the Phillies and Charlie Manuel to play a lot of small ball.  Getting runners on base and bunting and moving them into scoring position.  The Phillies may even be stealing more bases this year not like other years.  They are going to have to generate runs any way they can.  This is a different style of play in which the Philadelphia Phillies are accustomed to playing.

The Philadelphia Phillies 2012 regular season is officially underway and there is much excitement in the city of Philadelphia for this team to win another World Series title.  The road to the title began yesterday and it is going to be an exciting summer in the City of Brotherly Love.  At least all Phillies fans hope so.
