The Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets played the rubber game of this weekends series at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.  The Mets were looking to sweep the series and the Phillies really needed this game before they headed off on a West coast trip starting in San Francisco on Monday night.  The Phillies defeated the Mets, 8-2.

The Phillies now go on a ten game West coast trip with their record standing at 4-5 on this young season.  The Phillies offense did wake up in Sunday's game with a 14 hit attack and the offensive production was there but they need to build on this as they head out on this difficult road trip.

Cole Hamels was on the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies in Sunday afternoon's game.  He pitched well for the Phillies and he was the main reason that the Phillies won the game.  Ty Wiggington also was a huge factor in the game as well as he was in the starting lineup.  He had a huge double in the eighth inning that scored three and the Phillies had the insurance runs and the game in their hands.  Hamels after a slow first inning start after giving up a homerun by Ike Davis, just gave up four singles and one runner to second base the rest of the game.

The starting pitching on this Philadelphia Phillies team is expected to be strong and carrying this team, especially early on without Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.  Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels are the big horses on this pitching staff and are expected to do big things.  Vance Worley is the wild card in this rotation because if he does anything like last year well it will be just huge.

The Phillies will have to pickup their offense starting on Monday night when the Phillies will face the San Francisco Giants ace pitcher Tim Lincecum.  The Phillies will have their ace Roy Halladay on the mound against the Giants.   This is going to be an excellent game between excellent pitchers.  This should be a real pitchers dual.   The Phillies do know they need to play good team baseball and know the starting pitching will be what will carry this team in the first few months of the season on their shoulders.  This is a really big early season road trip for this club because the Phillies fans could really find out what kind of team they will have this season.  Utley and Howard returns will happen but the question is there as to when.  Well for now this team is just going to have to figure out how to win games
