The Philadelphia Flyers Scott Hartnell had a goal and an assist, and Matt Read scored the shootout winner as the Flyers came back from a three-goal deficit and got an important 5-4 victory over the Calgary Flames in Calgary on Saturday Night. It did not start off pretty for the Flyers as they again got off to a slow start in a game.
Matt Read's goal ended the game in the fifth round of the shootout when he beat Calgary Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff. Jakub Voracek, Braydon Coburn, and Nicklas Grossman all scored goals for the Philadelphia Flyers. With the win over the Flames the Flyers moved their overall record to 34-20-7 which puts them in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Calgary Flames got goals from Mark Giordano, Matt Stajan, Tom Kostopoulos, and Alex Tanguay. They got their goals just about any way a team could get a goal. The Flames scored at even strength, on a power play, short handed, and on a penalty shot.
The Philadelphia Flyers started Ilya Bryzgalov in goal and again he got off to a very bad start. He allowed the Flames to score two goals in the first period and they team again was down in a hockey game. He played very bad in the first period and the Flyers were down 2-0 quickly. As the game went on Bryzgalov played better and kept his team close in the game. He stopped four of five shots in the shootout that nailed the victory down for the Flyers.
The Flyers goal right now for the remainder of the season is to put together a string of complete games and wins. They have 21 games left in the regular season and they need to start showing some sense of urgency. They have to solidfy their position in the Eastern Conference. They need to play their best hockey going into the playoffs. Again the goaltending is going to be the key. It will either carry them or it will end their season. They could go far in the playoffs with the talent they have but they could be knocked out in round one. The goaltending is going to be the big factor and they need to get that from Bryzgalov. He was signed to the big free agent contract during the off season to be that guy for the Flyers and especially in the playoffs. It is time for the Philadelphia Flyers to get on a winning roll and now is the time to do it.
